A new Touring grade is available sitting in the middle of the Maxx Sport and higher specced GT. In total the 2017 Mazda CX-5 lineup now ranks as follows:

The familiar engine line up returns with choices of the 2.0- and 2.5-litre SKYACTIV-G petrol engines as well as the 2.2-litre turbo diesel SKYACTIV-D though Mazda claims a 4% fuel economy improvements over the previous CX-5. The 2.0-litre and 2.5-litre petrol units come in at 6.9L/100km and 7.5L/100km respectively while the 2.2-litre turbo diesel is rated at 6.0L/100km. Developed for the Mazda 6, the diesel models now benefit from High-Precision DE Boost Control, Natural Sound Smoother and Natural Sound Frequency Control technologies that improve both performance and noise/vibration levels.
While nothing is confirmed, Mazda is also said to be toying with the idea of a future high performance CX-5 flagship powered by the company’s widely acclaimed 2.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine currently found in the CX-9 seven seat SUV. That engine produces 170kW and 420Nm in the CX-9.
Handling across the range has been improved with the addition of G-Vectoring Control on AWD models, a system that adjusts engine torque to shift the weight to the front wheels on turn in and then shifts torque to the rear throughout the corner for a more planted and stable feel. Further assisting handling performance is the chassis improvements resulting in 15% more torsional rigidity over the previous model. Engineering efforts were also focused on improving noise and vibration levels for a more comfortable driving experience that sees the new CX-5 offering a level of quietness similar to driving the previous model 20km/h slower.
