The first Australian appearance of the Mercedes-AMG GT R will be at the stage of the 2017 Bathurst 12 Hour Race painted in the same “Green Hell Magno” colour as the Nürburgring Nordschleife record setting model. The driver entrusted to the jewl of the AMG lineup will be AMG brand ambassador Bernd Schneider, with credentials like 5 time DTM champion and former Bathurst 12 hour winner. The car will be pushed to its limits come race day.
The 2017 Bathurst 12 Hour race takes place from 3 to 5 February at the iconic Mount Panorama circuit in New South Wales.
The Mercedes-AMG GT R gained the title of “Beast of the Green Hell” after lapping the Nürburgring Nordschleife in 7:10.9 minutes, the fastest ever road going sports car tested by German magazine “Sport Auto”.
Using the same chassis and drivetrain as the Mercedes-AMG GT, the GT R benefits from wider front and rear wings, automatically adjusting front air intakes, a larger rear aerofoil and a rear double diffuser. In combination with the active rear-wheel steering, nine stage adjustable traction control system and completely adjustable coil over suspension, the 430kW / 700Nm twin turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 brings the whole package together. Expect to see a few Mercedes-AMG GT R’s on Australian roads when they go on sale later this year in June.
