Formula E continues to evolve and grow with the latest big name manufacturer BMW backing the sport with an official entry for the 2018 season. The allure of developing electrically powered formula cars is too great of an opportunity for many manufacturers to miss out on, it provides the perfect environment to test and develop cutting edge technology that will filter down to their road going models.
“The borders between production and motor racing development are more blurred at BMW i Motorsport than in any other project,” mentioned Klaus Fröhlich, a member of BMW’s Board of Management. “The result is a technology transfer on a whole new level. We are certainly confident that the BMW Group will benefit greatly from the experience gained in the field of electrotechnology during this project.”
The series has already attracted the commitment of Renault and Jaguar Land Rover and Porsche are seriously flirting with the idea of entering the series as well. The BMW team will be working in tandem with the already established Andretti Formula E team where BMW are bringing an entirely new drivetrain for their works entry.
“We are excited to expand our partnership with BMW i and serve as BMW’s official Formula E works team beginning in Season 5,” Michael Andretti said, CEO of Andretti Autosport. “The ongoing collaboration between BMW and Andretti Formula E has provided a strong foundation for BMW’s entry as an official manufacturer.“
