Deep within the ECU programming for the Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ lies a little cheat code that can completely disable all driving aids. That means no electronic stability control, traction control, electronic brake distribution, brake assist and no anti-lock brakes either.
So why on earth would you ever want to turn all these safety features off when they could very well save your life? Well, if you plan to partake in any form of motorsport, odds are you don’t want the car interrupting and filtering your inputs mid corner. And even in sport/race mode the 86 / BRZ will still take charge if it senses things are getting too out of control. So the “Pedal Dance” is your ticket to a completely raw car on the track and here’s how to do it.
- Make sure the car is warmed up completely.
- Pull the handbrake up three times and hold it on the third.
- Push the brake pedal down three times and hold it down on the third.
- Pull the handbrake another three times holding it up on the third.
- Push the brake pedal down two more times.
If you’ve done this correctly and within the 30 second time window you’ll have two lights come up on the gauge cluster and that’s it, no more electronic overlord telling you how to drive your car.
Please keep in mind that this is for the track only and should never be used on public roads as there’s a good chance it’ll void your insurance policy (you’ve been warned!).
