The second generation Audi SQ5’s details have all been revealed as part of its debut at the 2017 Detroit auto show. Audi have opted to move away from the supercharged engine (international model) as used in the first generation SQ5 towards a turbocharged unit, still a V6 the new engine pumps out 260kW and 500Nm of torque. For increased response the turbo has been mounted within the 90 degree V of the cylinder banks which assists with keeping the power unit compact. Audi are touting a 5.4 second 0-100km/h performance figure along with an 8.3L/100km economy figure and an electronically limited top speed of 250km/h.
Sandwiched between the engine and the quattro permanent all wheel drive system lies an eight speed tiptronic gearbox with close ratio’s down low and more efficient ratios reserved for higher gears. The quattro system has a slight bias of power delivery to the rear wheels and when required will send torque to either the front or rear based on which axle has more traction. To assist turn in and cornering performance the system can apply pressure to the inside wheel’s brake for more stable and precise cornering.
If you feel like the standard model could do with a little more performance then you’re in luck because the 2018 Audi SQ5 comes with several performance orientated options.
The sport differential can be optioned in for improved performance under power for tight corners by distributing torque to the outside wheel pushing the car into the curve.
The SQ5 comes standard with 20″ wheels wrapped in 255/45 tyres though 21″ wheels are also available as an option and Audi Sport have five exclusive designs available in this size. Tucked under the wheels you’ll find the 350mm six piston brakes with optional red painted callipers.
New to the second generation SQ5 is the electromechanical power steering that can be optioned up to have a dynamic ratio based on speed and steering angle.
And additionally an all new air suspension system that allows ride height adjustment and increased damping control can be optioned into the SQ5.
While no pricing has been announced yet locally we can expect to see the SQ5 on Australian roads towards the later half of 2017.
