Several weeks ago the notorious ransomware now dubbed WannaCry was unleashed upon the world causing havoc left right and centre. Once infected, it would encrypt users files and hold them ransom until a payment of bitcoin was made, take too long to make the payment and the ransom amount would increase.
The list of victims includes Nissan, Renault and last week Honda had to halt production for a day at their Sayama plant near Tokyo after being infected. And it looks like the victims list continues to grow with 55 red light cameras in Victoria having been infected with the ransomware.
A spokesperson from state’s Justice Department stated that the ransomware was introduced to the system last week by a contractor through a case of human error. Currently the agency is still in the process of removing it from any affected machines and expects to have the job complete in several days. As the ransomware had no effect on the accuracy of the camera’s, motorists issued fines for the period will still be required to pay their dues.
